  • Mapping Myanmar's new political geography

In this discussion brought to you from the Australian National University's College of Asia and the Pacific, Dr Nicholas Farrelly introduces Myanmar's new political geography through a series of maps. He discusses the evolution of Myanmar politics from long-term military dictatorship to a nascent parliamentary system where regular elections are planned. The focus of this discussion is the November 2010 general election. Dr Farrelly provides a brief introduction to the electorates and to the re-shaping of the national terrain around the 330 lower house (Pyithu Hluttaw) constituencies of the new national legislature. He discusses political parties and margins of victory, and the interactions of geography and political outcomes. His analysis ends with some brief reflections on the 2012 by-e...

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The ancient city of Bagan (formerly Pagan), located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar, was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan between the 9th to 13th centuries. More than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains area of Myanmar, of which more than 2,200 temples and pagodas can still be seen today. 2. Myanmar (Burma) – is a country which has a history of more than 2.5 thousand years old. Many questions arise: why people called Myanmar– Burma, and what name came first? Official Burmese publications noted that “Myanmar” and “Yangon” in the country were ancestral names that have been renamed by the British colonial authorities, when they came to Myanmar in the late 19th century. Both names refer to the main ethnic group in the country, and in fact do not contradict each other. In 2006, the new official name (Myanmar) was adopted in the UN. However, the decision to rename the state has not been approved by the Parliament, as provided by the Constitution. The new official name is considered by the Burmese opposition and some countries of the world – is illegal. That’s why this country has two different names simultaneously. 3. In Myanmar, lives the tribe, in which all women specifically lengthen the neck at 25-30 cm. On the territory of Myanmar (and Thailand) lives the tribe of Padaung. Padaung tribe has an ancient tradition – women of this tribe wear rings on their necks. The first ring is worn by a girl at 5 years old, then the rings are added throughout life and can achieve the total weight of 9 kg. 4. The inhabitants of Myanmar (Burma), have no surnames or patronymics, they have only names. That is, two siblings may be Ming Ming and Mo Mo and determine that they are brothers is not possible in written form. Furthermore the name may vary with age. 5. Since March 27, 2006 Naypyidaw is the capital city of Myanmar. The moving of the capital of Myanmar was under astrological forecasts and faith of the country’s leadership in lucky numbers. At 11 a.m. November 11, 2005 by eleven battalions on 1100 military trucks were transported the property of the 11 ministries from Yangon to Naypyidaw. 6. Mandalay was the capital of the Burmese Empire. The city is built around the ancient palace complex, with walled and moat. Near the city of Mandalay there is the Mahamuni temple. Visitors of the temple bring golden leaves as the gift for Buddha, the layer of leaves today is more than 15cm. 7. The world's largest book stands upright, set in stone, in the grounds of the Kuthodaw pagoda (kuthodaw, "royal merit") at the foot of Mandalay Hill. This is a book of sacred Buddhist texts that has 1460 pages. Each page is a huge piece of polished marble, on which is engraved about a hundred lines of text, has a height of 1.5 m, width of 1 m and a thickness of 12.7 cm. Surrounded by the Arctic Ocean from the north, by the Pacific Ocean from the east and by the Indian Ocean from the south, it is separated from Africa by Suez Canal. The Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea separate Asia from Europe, farther the overland border runs through the Caucasus Mountains, the Caspian Sea, the Ural River and Ural Mountains. This boundary crosses through the territory of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, so these states are in both continents. Armenia and Cyprus geographically are in Asia, but politically and culturally they also are considered as a part of Europe. The largest of the Asian countries by area is Russia, which occupies about 30% of the total territory of the continent. The smallest one of the independent states is the Maldives, it is an archipelago of islands famous for its beach resorts.
